De Nederlandse heren VII hebben een goede Amsterdam Sevens achter de rug. In de zaterdag poule werd gespeeld tegen het Duitse Aachen, AAC Rugby en de Betty Boys uit Ierland.

De eerste wedstrijd tegen het Duitse Aachen werd gewonnen met 40-5. Vervolgens werd er gespeeld tegen AAC Rugby, een echte thuiswedstrijd voor beiden. Ook deze wedstrijd werd gewonnen met een einduitslag van 54-5. De derde en laatste wedstrijd van de dag werd gespeeld tegen de Bettys Boys uit Ierland. In deze wedstrijd lieten de mannen zien hoe Sevens gespeeld moet worden: 13 try’s in 14 minuten. Door deze grote score van 69-0 stonden de mannen er gunstig voor, namelijk een derde plek op de totale toernooiranking na dag 1. Dit betekende doorspelen op dag 2  voor de Silver Pier maar wel in één van de zwaarste pools. Alle 12 poolwinnaars van dag 1 zijn verdeeld over vier pools van 3 teams. Vervolgens spelen de vier poolwinnaars van dag 2 de halve finales en de winnaars hiervan tenslotte de finale.

Het werd als verwacht een zware tweede dag op de Amsterdam Sevens voor de Nederlandse 7’s-mannen. De eerste wedstrijd werd gespeeld tegen Georgie op het stadionveld, alwaar veel belangstellenden op de tribune zaten. De mannen begonnen sterk en stonden bij rust met 7-0 achter. Helaas profiteerden de Georgiers de tweede helft van een aantal foutjes en wonnen de wedstrijd met 29-7. De tweede wedstrijd moest Nederland aan de bak tegen de Templars RC. Dit is het niveau waar Nederland zich graag aan wil meten. Tegen dit team speelde Nederland twee jaar terug (toen uitkomend als de Mell’s Exciles) nog de halve finale die maar net verloren ging met 15-14. De Engelsen startten erg sterk en kwamen snel op voorsprong. De tweede helft verdedigde Nederland beter en kreeg daardoor maar 1 try tegen. De eindstand werd 33-0. Dit betekende het einde van het toernooi voor de mannen en de Templars gingen door naar de halve finale. Het jonge Nederlands Heren Sevens Team is weer een ervaring rijker om te gebruiken op het volgende -FIRA-toernooi in Israel op 31 mei 1n 1 juni a.s.

Op donderdag 23 mei 2013 is vanwege de combinatie van slechte conditie en onvoldoende beschikbaarheid van de velden op het NRCA en extreme weersverwachtingen besloten het NK Sevens 2013 af te gelasten. Naar aanleiding van de vele reacties uit de rugbygemeenschap op het afgelasten en een mogelijke verandering van de verwachte weersituatie voor komend weekend, is onderzocht of het kampioenschap niet alsnog naar een andere locatie verplaatst kon worden. Castricumse RC heeft aangeboden het toernooi voor de senioren op zondag te organiseren en deze mogelijkheid is zorgvuldig bekeken. Slechts vier clubs bleken echter in staat deel te nemen aan een toernooi in Castricum. Daarom is besloten om het NK Sevens Senioren definitief af te gelasten. Ook voor het toernooi van de cubs en junioren op zaterdag is gezocht naar een geschikte alternatieve locatie, maar die is niet gevonden. Daarom zal ook het NK Sevens Jeugd definitief geen doorgang vinden.

De afgelopen periode is er na een lange vorstperiode in korte tijd veel regen gevallen. Dit heeft ertoe geleid dat de huidige staat van de velden erbarmelijk is. Vanaf woensdagnacht tot en met zondag wordt veel regen verwacht. Daarnaast zijn voor komend weekend gevoelstemperaturen van -10 graden voorspeld en straffe noordenwinden. Door de regen, de kwaliteit van de velden en de ijzige temperaturen is de verwachting dat komend weekend de omstandigheden dusdanig zijn dat de veiligheid van spelers, scheidsrechters en publiek in geding is. Het bestuur van de Nederlandse Rugbybond heeft daarom na zorgvuldig overwegen en intensief overleg met specialisten besloten het Nederlands Kampioenschap Sevens 2013 aankomend weekend af te gelasten. Het bestuur betreurt dat zij dit besluit heeft moeten nemen en begrijpt dat veel leden teleurgesteld zullen zijn, maar is ook van mening dat veiligheid voor alles gaat. Het toernooi zal niet verplaatst worden naar een latere datum in het seizoen.

PURMEREND – Worden het de Swaffelaars, Purmer Posse, de Billy Buffels, Team Captain Morgan, team Printenbind.nl of toch een ander team? Zondag 26 mei zal voor de 28e keer het Rugby Stratentoernooi worden gehouden op de velden van Rugby Club Waterland.

Zondag 26 mei strijden de teams op het 28e Stratentoernooi van Rugby Club Waterland om de gewilde cup. Het idee van dit toernooi is om iedereen kennis laten maken met de rugbysport. In teams van 7 tegen 7 wordt er gestreden om de eerste plaats. De perfecte gelegenheid om eens mee te maken hoe het is om een rugbyer te zijn. De afgelopen jaren is het toernooi flink gegroeid en met trots kan de organisatie melden dat het aantal inschrijvingen dit jaar weer flink is gestegen. Met nog een aantal dagen te gaan staat de teller nu op 13 teams (!!), een recordaantal.

Afgelopen jaren kwamen er steeds meer teams en supporters op het toernooi af waarmee het toernooi een begrip is geworden. Door middel van speciale beginners trainingen zijn de nieuwe rugbyers klaargestoomd voor het toernooi. Om 11:00 uur zullen de eerste wedstrijden starten en de finale zal om 15:30 worden gespeeld. Wie neemt de titel over van de winnaars van vorig jaar, de WDP Jesters?

Zondag 26 mei komen meisjes in de leeftijd van 14-18 jaar uit heel Nederland naar de Utrechtse Rugby Club om Sevens Rugbywedstrijden te spelen. Ook jij kunt hier bij zijn!

RugbyclubRugby Sevens is de snelle, atletische variant van rugby waarbij je met 7 tegen 7 wedstrijden speelt. Deze vorm wordt alleen in toernooien gespeeld. Het Nederlands Dames Sevens Team behoort op dit moment tot de Top 10 van de wereld en met deze klassering maakt het team kans op een plaats in de Olympische Spelen van Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

Tot nu toe vist het Nationale Sevens Team uit een kleine vijver van rugbydames. Daarom is URC net zoals rugbyclubs in het hele land, bezig met het oprichten van een meisjesteam. Meer talenten kun zo opgeleid worden waarmee de kans op Olympisch succes vergroot wordt. Bij URC speelt al een aantal jeugdige talenten, maar met nog een paar meiden erbij lukt het om mee te gaan draaien in de landelijke competitie. International Rugby Board: AMSTERDAM -MAY, 18, 2013 – New Zealand became the first ever winner of the Women’s Sevens World Series after sealing victory at the Amsterdam Sevens earlier.

In an enthralling and tense final, the New Zealanders beat a highly spirited Canadian side 33-24 in a game that only saw New Zealand edge out victory in the last few minutes.

Sean Horan’s side had earlier beaten Spain 14-5 in the Cup quarter finals to ensure they would lift the inaugural World Series title as well, finishing the Series with 74 points, ahead of England, Canada, and USA.

And there was even better news for New Zealand’s women, as Portia Woodman ended the season as both the top points scorer (105) and top try scorer (21), which included a crucial touchdown in the final.

“It’s just been an awesome year,” said New Zealand captain Huriana Manuel after the final whistle in Amsterdam.

“We’ve worked very hard for it and I’m very happy for the girls. We are always striving to do our best and I am just really proud. We work very hard for each other and to take both trophies away is amazing and I couldn’t ask for more.”

New Zealand coach Sean Horan was delighted with the win, after a hard fought victory over the impressive Canadians.

“It is pretty special. We have some really special girls on this team and we’ve just come to learn.”

“We are just getting better and better and that is the idea. We are proud of the girls, a good bunch and we’re just enjoying the experiences of the Women’s Sevens World Series.”

The weather cleared in Amsterdam on Saturday with massive crowds turning out for the final round of what has been a remarkable IRB Women’s Seven’s World Series.

“The final between New Zealand and Canada was absolutely brilliant, and it demonstrated all that is good about Women’s Rugby,” said IRB Head of Competition and Performance Mark Egan, who was on hand to present the winning trophy.

“The inaugural Women’s Sevens World Series has achieved its aim of providing these elite athletes with top class competition around the world, and they’ve really prospered from it.”

“Along with the other events in Dubai, Houston and Guangzhou, it’s been a major building block for these girls on the road to the Rugby World Cup Sevens in Moscow next month, but also towards the Olympic Games in Rio in 2016,” he said.

Earlier in this afternoon’s action, Canada came from 7 points behind to beat England 12-7 in their semi final thanks to tries from Bianca Farella and Kelly Russell to reach their first Cup final of the season having earlier beaten North American rivals USA 19-5 with Kayla Moleschi, Mandy Marchak and former Canadian netball star Brittany Waters scoring their tries.

The USA won the Plate, while there was also celebration for hosts Netherlands who beat South Africa to win the Bowl.

Vanesha McGee, USA captain and winning try scorer, Plate champions: “The first game [on day two] was rough, but we are pretty resilient and we bounced back, fought hard in the last two matches, so feeling happy about those wins and we now move forward to the World Cup with that energy. The World Series has shown that all the top teams are in contention and with Sevens anything can happen on any given day. I am immensely proud, we showed a lot of heart and passion for the game and each other.”

Netherlands head coach Gareth Gilbert, Bowl winners: “It’s fantastic to come back after the disappointment yesterday and I am so proud with how the team went today. We really focusses on the positives from the game with New Zealand, the determination to defend our line, the energy and how we took it to them. The tournament here is unbelievable, I am really proud and so happy for Dutch Rugby as it has had a huge impact.”

DAY ONE

Barry Maddocks, England coach, Cup quarter finalists: “I am really chuffed with the girls, we started a bit sluggish this morning. We have brought a lot of different girls because we want to give them the opportunity to put their hands up for that and a lot of the girls in that game (against Canada) went ‘have a look at me Barry’. You have to defend against the top sides and that was a focus for us for that game. We knew Canada would come at us so that was good.”

Vanesha McGee, USA captain, three wins from three on day one: “Today has been good, hard fought in all three matches, we put a lot of work in, we came out on top and we’re feeling confident and proud of what we did today.  Our tournament last week let us get onto the front week this weekend, and it’s great that our hard work is paying off here. Everything is a team effort so we’re really looking to work together and put in some more scores tomorrow.”

Huriana Manuel, New Zealand captain, after beating China: “Day one has been very tough on us, we didn’t expect to start slow in the first game against Russia, we give them credit, as did China. We have a lot to work on but looking forward to our next game. Our policy is to do hot and colds, put our skins on, feet up and just recover for our next game.”

Kelly van Harskamp, Netherlands captain: “Really good feeling, first game done, nerves are gone, and now we keep going. Take a rest, and go for it against NZ and Russia. China were hard, we are through it and we are going.”

Jen Kish, Canada captain, after defeat to France: “We had a slow start, bit disappointed with our performance but we have to come out firing for our next match and stay composed. We are used to playing down, so it doesn’t really matter, it is just when we give the ball away and we don’t go forward that is what really kills us.”

Sharni Wiliams, Australia captain, after first match of the day: “It was what we wanted, we wanted to come out harder than we did in London. We came up against them in the first match in London and we lost there, so this was definitely a turn around for us. Today we showed we can play in the wet.”
