Dangerous: The Netherlands’ Kelly van Harskamp
On February 1, Houston will host the second leg of the new IRB Women’s World Series sevens rugby event, which mirrors the IRB Men’s tournament at four locations around the globe. Amanda Love previews the action in Texas.
The World Series provides nations with quality opposition at the highest level and further exposure for teams in developing countries. There are six core series teams and six invitational sides, who compete in three round robin pools at each event. With all roads leading to Rio at the Summer Olympics in 2016, it is an exciting time to be a part of Women’s Sevens rugby.

Hi everybody! I hope you all had a great New Year and settling in to 2013.
Amazing how time flys, I remember so well sitting in the stands after we had played all our games at the IRB Rugby World Cup in Dubai, reflecting what we did and what the future would bring. That the next World Cup seemed so far away, before you know it we are months away from the biggest event for Rugby 7s pre-olympics. Incredible to see how much has changed in those four years. Some massive steps have been made to make rugby 7s bigger and bigger. Very exciting!
Yesterday my team left to Houston for a training camp and the IRB Women Sevens World Series with a squad of 14 players. They will be training in Houston,Texas for two weeks before the tournament. Really cool to see two girls being capped for the first time; Paula Schouten and Jasmine van der Waal.
The team and coaching staff is being assisted by Scott Waldrom who played for the All Blacks 7s and 15s and 8 years of Super Rugby. He is staying with the team for a few weeks and after the Houston tournament he will be flying home to Wellington. He arrived last week in Amsterdam and we are happy to have somebody of his experience and knowledge helping the team.
Unfortunately I can’t go to Houston because of my injury. My groin injury has been taking a very long time to heal. It was very clear to see that I had an overburden in my groin. So with rest and specific physiotherapy it would slowly be ok. But weeks
turned in to months and I wasn’t responding to rehab and rest.Not training with my teammates for months, has been difficult. It takes a lot of dicsipline not to force myself into training, I had to be patient, listen to my body and rest was the most important thing. I’m a teamplayer and love the banter and standing on the field and working hard together to reach our goals. For me not doing that has been hard.
I have to thank Sven Vos who is our physiotherapist who has worked with me over the last few months. He has been absolutly great, helped
me a lot in staying positive, motivated and keeping patient.But I’ve got good news, I’m on the right track at the moment as I had surgery last Wednesday. I was diagnosed with a sports Hernia, that means I had a tiny hole in my grion. Something I developed over the years of training and had not shown on any of my scans and MRI’s.
A week after surgery I have been improving every day, hopefully in six weeks time I’ll be back on the pitch being recoverd from my surgery and being able to train and play, I can’t wait!
Being injured also has a postive side, I’m more motivated and have more fighting spirit that I ever had. It gives you lot’s of time to think and realise what you really want. Succes or progress can not be giving you have to work incredible hard for it, that is something that will stay with me.

3e op EK rugby 7’s dames Ameland 2012 en 8e op 1e Worldseries Rugby 7.s Dubai 2012 .Tessa maakt deel uit van de Nederlandse damesselectie rugby 7’s. Na een flink aantal jaren turnen bij Attilla in Houten is ze -na de middelbare school- in Amsterdam gaan studeren aan de ALO. In die tijd begonnen met Rugby bij AAC in Amsterdam en al snel geselecteerd voor de nationale selectie van het relatief nieuwe 7s rugby. dat gaat zo goed dat de dames inmiddels A-status hebben verworven en op weg zijn naar Olympische spelen in Rio 2016. Inmiddels afgestudeerd als sportdocent nu dus fulltime rugbyster.

In de voorbereiding van het Elite Team op het IRB Women’s World Series toernooi in Houston, komt Scott Waldrom de staff versterken als Assistent Coach. Scott Waldrom is een 32-jarige voormalige All Blacks flanker, daarnaast heeft hij Super Rugby gespeeld voor de Chiefs, Hurricanes en Crusaders. Scott is dinsdag 8 januari gearriveerd en blijft bij het team tot 4 februari.
Scott: ‘I am excited to be part of such a quickly developing team that is heading in the right direction for Rio 2016.’
Gareth Gilbert, Bondscoach Dames Sevens verheugd zich op de samenwerking met Waldrom: “It is great to have someone of Scotts calibre over here and he will definitely bring a lot of knowledge about the finer details of the game. I am looking forward to working with him and taking the team to the next level”.

We mogen weer!
Het kerstreces ligt alweer een tijdje achter ons, dus rugby time. Zaterdag 12 januari is de jongste jeugd nog vrij, echter we hebben een kraker in de Lotto Ereklasse op het programma staan. Eerder strooide het weer roet in het eten, maar dat laten we ons niet nogmaals gebeuren, toch..! De Castricumse Rugby Club ontvangt Rugby Club Hilversum. Inzet de derde plaats met recht op een extra punt in het vervolg van de vernieuwde competitie. De Haagsche gaat op bezoek bij ’t Gooi en zal daar ook proberen een gooi naar een hogere ranking te realiseren. De klapper van de week wordt de confrontatie tussen de Hookers en Utrecht. De winnaar neemt plaats in de top zes, bij gelijkspel tussen deze kemphanen, maakt Diok nog aanspraak op de top van de competitie, maar dan moet er thuis wel afgerekend worden (met bonus) met de Pink Panthers. De Dukes gaan op bezoek bij Amstelveen en zullen de druk op ’t Gooi hoog willen houden, inzet het “winterkampioenschap”. Waterland en Eemland zullen elkaar bestrijden om de oh zo vervelende laatste plaats van de hand te doen. Ja mensen, alle wedstrijden hebben hun eigen verhaal, dus kom je favoriet aanmoedigen op de Nederlandse rugbyvelden.
Zondag 13 Januari staan er drie thuiswedstrijden op het program voor de Castricummers. Het Driede speelt om 12.30 uur tegen de Scrumboks en de Ladies nemen het op hetzelfde tijdstip op tegen de Delft. Daarna is alle aandacht voor de Shadows die weer naar boven willen kijken ten koste van de Pickwick Players. Zij vangen de wedstrijd aan om 14.30 uur. De colts combinatie Cas/Alkmaar/Haarlem/Waterland gaan hun verste uit-wedstrijd spelen tegen het combinatie team van Roosendaal/Oemoemenoe in de Colts plate. Plaats delict Middelburg met een KO tijd van 13.00 uur. Zondag, gezellig rugbyen binnen en lang de lijn.

WILLEMSTAD — Het onmogelijke mogelijk maken, dat is voor de Curaçao Rugby Federation (CRF) ongeveer wat ze iedere dag proberen. De CRF is een kleine organisatie, die pas drie jaar op Curaçao bezig is. Op 12 januari speelt de nationale herenselectie zijn eerste officiële thuiswedstrijd: op een echte grasmat. Dan is er nog een primeur: de bondscoach selecteerde een beoefenaar van de grappling-sport (een vechtsport) voor zijn rugbyploeg!
