Edinburgh wing king Tim Visser received recognition at the Magners League Awards in Kildare on Sunday night, being invited on stage to receive a framed photo of the competition’s Dream Team, in which he features for the second successive year.

Visser was commended for recently breaking the record for the most individual tries in a Magners League season, and for once again topping the tournament’s regular season scoring charts (finishing with 14).

The Dutchman, who will become eligible to play for Scotland next summer, also made it onto the shortlists for the Magners League Players’ Player of the Season and the Try of the Season, his spectacular effort in the win over Ospreys at Murrayfield in March having captured the public imagination.

Visser told www.edinburghrugby.org: “It was a great honour to be asked to collect the team photo on behalf of the Dream Team, and looking down the list of names in the side you realise once again what a privilege it is to have been selected.

“It’s fantastic to be given accolades, because it’s proof that the hard work you do on a daily basis is paying off, but I know I need to keep striving to improve. As a team, we want to do better next season, and that goes for me as an individual as well.”

Utrechtse Studenten Rugby Society (USRS) held one of the first Sevens tournaments in the Dutch calendar. Easter Sunday, fantastic sunshine and around the 27′C mark,(so were told). Two stream of Sevens were played: Experienced and Inexperienced. Sorry but as I have not yet cloned myself and thus covered only the experienced games. The two finals were held at the same time, so tried to cover these two matches simultaneously by hopping between the two fields.

Heb je in februari en maart ook zo genoten van de Six Nations rugbywedstrijden? Zou je rugby wel eens van dichtbij willen bekijken of meemaken? Wil je je mentaal en fysiek vast voorbereiden op het wereldkampioenschap rugby wat in september en oktober van dit jaar in Nieuw Zeeland zal worden gespeeld. Wil je gewoon eens kennismaken met het rugbyspel. Nou, dat kan bij sportvereniging KDO in De Kwakel.  Rugby is de op één na meest populaire sport in de wereld. In Nederland is het echter een relatief onbekende sport en eigenlijk is dat vreemd. Bij rugby draait het om  respect en fair play. Voor de tegenstander, de scheidsrechter, je teamgenoten en natuurlijk jezelf. Alle factoren voor een leuk en snel spel zijn aanwezig en ….. het is voor iedereen te spelen. Groot, klein, snel, sterk, handig, iedereen kan het spelen. Iedereen heeft zijn of haar eigen functie in het team. Door met elkaar samen te werken bereik je het doel en iedereen is daarbij even belangrijk. De jeugd kan in het begin al trainen én met wedstrijden starten, deze worden elk weekend in de wijde regio gehouden. De volwassenen zullen in het begin alleen gaan trainen en eventueel wedstrijden meespelen bij andere verenigingen, zodat ze de spelregels goed onder de knie krijgen. Qua outfit is er in het begin weinig nodig. Voetbalschoenen met noppen of rugbyschoenen (die hebben meer noppen), sokken en een trainingsbroek – kort of lang – zijn voorlopig voldoende. Wees niet bang, je hoeft geen sportman of -vrouw te zijn om lid te worden. Er zijn zowel snelle, kleine hardlopers als brede ‘beukers’ nodig. Tijdens de trainingen leren we iedereen de spelregels en conditie krijg je vanzelf. Heb je zin om eens kennis te komen maken met de rugbysport, dan ben je van harte welkom om een keer mee te komen trainen. De jeugd traint op maandag en woensdag van 18.30 tot 19.30 uur en de senioren trainen op woensdag en vrijdag van 20.00 tot 21.30 uur. Na een onverwachtse afzegging van België Onder 20 stond nu RTC Zuid tegen District Vlaanderen in het voorprogramma van Nederland vs België op 23 april 2011. Het werd voor RTC Zuid een stevige partij, die zeker diende als leermoment in de ontwikkeling van deze talenten. RTC Zuid verloor met 41-05. (05-29)

België leider na winst tegen Nederland

De Belgische nationale rugbyploeg heeft zaterdag zijn laatste groepswedstrijd van het seizoen in afdeling 1B van de European Nations Cup rugby met 18-30 gewonnen tegen Nederland.

Daardoor komen de Belgen voorlopig alleen aan de leiding in de groep. Moldavië heeft wel nog een wedstrijd minder gespeeld en werkt zijn laatste groepswedstrijd van het seizoen volgende zaterdag af tegen de Nederlanders.

  De reekswinnaar, die na tien wedstrijden in de lente van volgend jaar bekend zal zijn, promoveert naar klasse 1A.

Daar stonden wij dan, het reguliere rugby seizoen afgelopen, ons eerste echte toernooi van het naseizoen… wat zou het worden, zouden wij kunnen laten zien hoe wij gegroeid zijn als Turven team, wat wij allemaal kunnen. 12 Turven teams in het toernooi, dat is pittig, dat wordt spannend.

En dan gaat onze 1e wedstrijd niet door, Tilburg/Eindhoven zijn er (nog) niet. Vervelend, dat wordt nog langer wachten voordat wij aan de slag kunnen.

En toen het begon lieten wij echt zien wat wij als cluster AAC/RCH allemaal toe in staat zijn. Wij gaven de bal door, wij probeerde te communiceren met elkaar, wij gaven het onze alles, wij scoorde veel tries en wij genoten ten volle. En aan het einde van de poule wedstrijden merkten wij dat wij alle wedstrijden hebben gewonnen. Geweldig, door naar de “knock-out” fase van het toernooi.

Wij hebben wel met zijn alle even tussendoor een “team talk” moeten houden. Ondanks onze geweldige inspanningen en het niveau waren er een paar punten waar wij op moesten letten. Soms wilden wij het alleen doen, dus goed op letten en gericht de bal tijdig doorgeven zodra je (dreigt) vast te lopen. En blijven communiceren, vooral in de loose scrum, want wij verliezen toch energie, momentum en ook de bal door elkaar te bevechten om de bal i.p.v. elkaar te helpen. En opletten bij de aftrap, geen gekke or rare dingen doen, want ook daar worden wij soms onaangenaam verrast door bal verlies.

En dan de finale, AAC/RCH – NFC. Wat een ontknoping zeg, wat een energie, motivatie en ja, ook teleurstelling. 4 – 4 bij de eindfluit, en dan nog ruim 10 minuten moeten spelen voordat de wedstrijd beslecht wordt, en dan op een manier die wij liever niet hadden. Wij vochten er zo hard voor, wij gaven het onze alles, en dan toch verliezen, terwijl wij zo goed hebben gespeeld. Het leven kan soms hard zijn Turven, maar ondanks alles ben ik zo geweldig trots op jullie. Jullie waren terecht geëmotioneerd, maar jullie accepteerde het als mannen en een heel stoere Yfke.

Wij hebben niet gewonnen, maar wij hebben gehaald wat 10 andere Turven teams op het toernooi niet hebben gehaald…. wij speelde in de finale, en dat konden zij niet zeggen. Turven, voor mij zijn jullie allemaal kampioenen!

P.S. Onze AAC/RCH Benjamins kwamen enkele spelers te kort. Om toch mee te kunnen doen hebben zij meerdere van de oude/senior Turven geleend voor hun wedstrijden. Guy, Julian en Thijn hebben 4 extra wedstrijden op Benjamin niveau gespeeld. En ook nog de nodige tries voor onze Benjamins gescoord – klasse En dat allemaal naast de eigen Turven wedstrijden. Jullie waren terecht helemaal op eind van de middag, maar jullie toonden ware sportiviteit door onze Benjamins te helpen op deze manier, ook al was het een gigantische opgave. En Kees en Rayan hebben ook een wedstrijd meegedaan met de Benjamins en hun goed geholpen. Hulde aan jullie allemaal!

Earlier this season, the Edinburgh winger struck a friendly wager with his younger brother Sepp, who plays for Northumbrian side Blaydon, over who would score more tries over the forthcoming campaign.

There was no prize for the winner, but it was agreed that the loser’s forfeit should be a naked sprint down Edinburgh’s Royal Mile.

With the season nearly over, the older Visser’s try-count stands at 14.

Thirteen of those were collected in Magners League matches – a new record in the competition – but his haul is still far short of the 21 young Sepp has scored for Blaydon.

On balance, however, Tim has decided that he can live more easily with the shame of breaking his word than the embarrassment of streaking through the Scottish capital.

With an international career in his sights – the Dutch-born player will become eligible for Scotland on residence grounds next year – his discretion is probably understandable.

Visser will be in his familiar berth at Murrayfield tonight as Edinburgh seek to extend their recent run of good form against Newport Gwent Dragons.

Towards the end of a difficult campaign, Edinburgh’s home wins against the Ospreys and Aironi over the past month have levered them into eighth place in the Magners League table, and a bonus-point victory could see them leapfrog the Dragons into seventh.

“The motivation is to finish well because we have had such an up-and-down season,” said interim Edinburgh coach Nick Scrivener, who will be heading back to Australia at the season’s end.

“It’s not so much about my leaving, but about another coach coming in, and they will want to impress him.

“There is also a Worl Cup around the corner and there are just two games left for guys to put their hands up for selection. We also want to put in a good performance for the fans in our last home game. They have been on the rollercoaster with us and we want to repay them.”

Among those with international ambitions, the return of Ross Rennie at openside could be the most significant development.

The flanker has missed the last few weeks with a foot injury, but he had been close to his best before that setback and a couple of strong performances in the final two games could go a long way to securing his place in the World Cup squad.

At the other end of the M8, Glasgow’s final home match of the season, against the Scarlets, has the look of a going-away party, with many of the players who will be on duty at Firhill tonight taking their leave of the club within a few weeks.

The affection of the Glasgow fans is likely to be focused on Bernardo Stortoni, the Argentinian full-back who has been a firm favourite of the crowd since he arrived from Bristol four years ago.

Stortoni, 34, might yet be tempted to remain in rugby if a suitable offer came in, but he is preparing himself for a return to his homeland and a job on his father’s cattle ranch.

“I’m going to try to be a gaucho,” Stortoni smiled.

Besides Stortoni, the others playing tonight who will not be at Glasgow next season are Richie Vernon, James Edddie, Kevin Tkachuk and Aly Muldowney.

Glasgow, second from bottom in the Magners table, have little to play for, but the Scarlets are chasing a play-off place and will therefore have no concern for the poignancy of the occasion.

However, Glasgow coach Sean Lineen believes his side still want to finish their season on a high.

“The boys have trained well this week,” Lineen said.

“We’re looking for one hell of a performance.”
