’t Gooi’s Director of Rugby Gareth Gilbert spoke to heavensgame about their defeat in round one and their upcoming trip to Utrecht in round two.

’t Gooi had high hopes going into the first match with RC the Dukes, in what was the match of the round they came out tight losers, Gilbert had this to say about the game “The game was closely contested one and one which we believe we should have won after a great start. We were leading 13-3 at the break but to be honest it should have been 20-3 with all the missed opportunities.

Those missed opportunities would cost them dearly, as Gilbert explains “The Dukes came out and dominated the second half and we struggled to implement our plan and the way we wanted to play. We also struggled to understand the referee’s interpretation at the breakdown and conceded 22 penalties to our 2 in the 2nd half. This resulted in a yellow card and that proved to be the difference as the dukes ran in 2 tries to steal victory from us.”

De Doetinchemse Rugby Club Wild Rovers werkt samen met SportUnited aan het promoten van beweging en sport voor kinderen. In de maanden augustus in september is dat Rugby. Kinderen tot en met 13 jaar hebben in hun eigen wijk de gelegenheid kennis te maken met deze sport onder begeleiding van ervaren rugby spelers en medewerkers van SportUnited. Tijdens deze clinics wordt op een speelse wijze de basis beginselen van de sport worden bijgebracht om aan het einde van de clinic af te sluiten met een echt wedstrijdje. De clinics van 26 augustus en 2 september zijn alweer geweest en kunnen ondanks het matige weer een succes genoemd worden voor de kinderen, SportUnited en de rugby vereniging. De foto’s staan op de hyves site van sporten in de wijk. Buiten deze clinic bied de rugby vereniging ook uitstekende mogelijkheden om kennis te maken met de sport. Zo is het mogelijk om 3 maanden geheel vrijblijvend mee te trainen met de jeugd om aansluitend tegen een lage contributie (minder dan €80,=/jaar) lid te worden van deze vereniging. Tim Visser, Edinburgh’s flying Dutch winger, has reasserted his desire to play Test rugby for his adopted country, the past week having offered a reminder as to why he has become the hottest finishing talent in the Scottish game.

The winger, who finished last season as the leading try scorer in the Magners League with 10 tries in 17 appearances, ran in another two in the 49-21 defeat at The Rec on Saturday, albeit Edinburgh’s defensive frailties were again badly exposed last weekend.

Two days later, he picked up the Magners League Young Player of the Year prize at the tournament’s inaugural awards ceremony and, as Glasgow Warriors officials have effectively confirmed that Thom Evans has been forced to retire from the sport, Visser is peerless in Scotland when it comes to finishing power.

It presents both opportunity and frustration to the national team management since Visser only began the process of gaining residential qualification for Scotland a year ago, having opted against tying himself to his native Netherlands.

What is clear, though, is that, while he has qualified on residency grounds to play for England prior to his arrival at Edinburgh, playing for Scotland is now the only route to the pinnacle of the game for the former Newcastle Falcon. “I [became] qualified for England the day I moved up here but was no longer qualified for them as soon as I made that move,” he explained.

The only Englishman he needs to impress, then, is Andy Robinson, and Scotland’s head coach is paying close attention. “I’ve spoken to Andy a couple of times and he’s very interested,”said Visser. “I would never [choose] not [to] play for Scotland if I got the chance, but there is no point thinking about that at the moment because I don’t qualify for another two years.”

Meantime, then, Edinburgh will have the benefit of his full focus and, as one of the relative few in professional rugby who had more time off than they wanted over the summer, he is being tipped by Andy Boyd, Edinburgh’s conditioning coach, to have another great season.

The player remains understandably cautious. “Teams know what I can bring now so I don’t think it is going to be any easier this season,” he said, “but I now know how the other players play and what they expect me to do. I need to up things from last season.”

While Edinburgh supporters would accept that more of the same would be quite sufficient from the man who was the spear-head of the most effective attacking force in the league last season – Edinburgh rattled in 40 tries in all – Visser knows that the defensive side of his game has to improve dramatically.

“I’ve been looking at attacking opportunities off No.9 because both our scrum-halves are very good runners, but I’ve also been working on defence a lot,” he said of his personal close season programme. “We have been scoring a lot of tries, but have also been giving too many away and the Bath game was a reminder of that.

“To be fair we were going down there for our first game, while they had already played a couple of warm-up matches, and most of our defensive errors weren’t so much strategic as down to individual errors which were more to do with match fitness. You can’t get that match fitness right away, although our defence needs to improve hugely this weekend.I’ve been responsible for a couple of the soft tries we’ve given away and we know that people just need to make the tackles.”

Edinburgh meet London Irish at Murrayfield tomorrow evening, kick off 7.30.

Last season they dropped out at the semi final stage to the eventual champions Rugby Club Hilversum, to add insult to injury their coach at he time Des Tuivaii has moved to Hilversum this season.

Mega Rugby Week 2010 op ARC

Zoals vorig jaar is er dit jaar ook weer de Mega Rugby Week. Dit jaar zal die doorgaan van 11 september tot en met 19 september 2010.

In het kader van de week van de sportclub (BLOSO) zet ook Antwerp zijn deuren wagenwijd open voor alle geïnteresseerden.

Op zaterdag 11 september is er de Mega Rugby Dag van 12u30 tot 15u00 met daarna de kans om de eerste competitie wedstrijd van de damesploeg in eerste nationale afdeling.Alle jongengs en meisjes van 7 tot 14 jaar zijn welkom om te komen proeven van onze mooie sport. Door gediplomeerde trainers worden de basis aspecten van rugby doorlopen. Dit allemaal met als nodige afwisseling spelletjes die de hand-oog coördinatie te goed komen. Eindigen doen we met een wedstrijdje waarna alle kinderen een drankje wordt aangeboden.

Ouders en geïnteresseerden kunnen terecht voor uitleg over de sport, verzekering, lidgelden, tornooien, wedstrijden, …

Op dinsdag 14 september en vrijdag 17 september zijn er open trainingen. Iedereen die geïnteresseerd is kan gratis komen meetrainen. Op dinsdag voor de 7 tot en met 14 jarigen. Op vrijdag voor de 11 tot en met 14 jarigen.
